Roman Republic
1.) How did Rome's Republic develop?
They were divided into two groups. Plebeians and Patricians were forbidden to marry. Plebs lacked political rights.
2.) How did Rome's Government work?
It had a tripartite. One enforced the law, one made the laws, and the other interpreted them. It had checks and balances. The top officials were consuls. The other was praetors. The most important legislative body was the senate.
3.) What was the relationship between Plebians & Patricians like?
Plebs complain about having little power. They went to strike and refused to join the army. Plebs and Patricians were now allowed to marry.
4.) Who was Cincinnatus?
He was a dictator. He was a powerful enemy to the Romans.
5.) What were Rome's Law like?
The first code of laws were the 12 tables. Their laws were not written down. All citizens had the right to be treated equally. This is called the "Rule of Law."
6.) What was Carthage?
Its the enemy rival in the Mediterranean Sea.
7.) What happened in the 1st, 2nd, & 3rd Punic War?
Carthaginians were determined to stop invasion on Sicily in the first punic war. They lost and had to leave. Carthage sent hannibal to attack Rome. Roman suffered severe loss but raised another army and won in the second punic war. Romans spread salt so no crops would grow when they enslaved 50,000 men, women, and children in the third punic war. They also won that one too.
8.) What are some other Conquests of Rome ?
Macedonia and Greece became under Roman rule. They gained their first province in Asia. They called the Mediterranean mar nostrum - "Our Sea."
